Functions of testosterone:
A) During intrauterine life: - responsible for :
-male pattern of sexual behavior
-growth n development of the wollfian duct into epididymis, vas deferens n seminal vesicles
-for developing ext. male genitalia n inhibiting those of the female, + action of DHT-receptor complexes
-the growth n development of urogenital sinus into prostate, urethera n scrotum
-descent of testicles in the scrotum, + by action of DHT
B) At Puberty n during adulthood :
MASCULINIZING EFFECTS -
~on primary sex organs : essential for spermatogenesis
~on secondary sex organs : for growth n function of seminal vesicles, prostate n Cowper's gland. + external genitalia is absolutely dependant on DHT for their development n growth.
~secondary sex characteristics :
-Skin : sebaceous gland secretion thickens --> increase predisposing to acne
-Hair growth : appearance of beard. Hair appears at pubic region, chest, axilla n general body hair increases.
-Body configuration : Shoulder broadness n muscle enlarge
-Voice : becomes deeper due to increase of vocal cords in lenght
